Workshops 2011

ENGAGE 2011 brought together 24 filmmaking students and graduates (writers, writers/directors and producers) from across Europe during three residential workshops which took place in Ireland, Scotland, Estonia and Finland over a six-month period. The participants took part in all three workshops, the dates were as follows:

 Workshop 13 - 7 AprilDublin
 Workshop 212 - 16 JuneEdinburgh
 Workshop 325 - 30 SeptemberTallinn and Helsinki

Thanks to continued support from MEDIA, ENGAGE 2011 was the forth year of the successful ENGAGE programme, through which over 100 participants from 16 countries have built creative bridges and projects under the expert guidance of industry practitioners and staff from the partner institutions.

A collaboration between four of Europe’s leading screen practice institutions – the Screen Academy Scotland at Edinburgh Napier University (a Skillset Film and Media Academy), the National Film School at the Institute of Art, Design and Technology (IADT) in Dún Laoghaire, Ireland, the Baltic Film and Media School at Tallinn University and the School of Art and Design at Aalto University, Helsinki – with support from the MEDIA programme of the European Union – ENGAGE offers a powerful mix of networking events, pitching sessions, project surgeries and case studies to help participants gain a better understanding of international co-production processes and the nature of collaborative project development.

ENGAGE concentrates on three key areas:

Screenwriting for low-budget, international film and television drama
Development and co-production of fiction, animation and documentary features for the European market
Production and distribution in the digital age

During the workshops, experts from each of the host countries shared their knowledge and experience of the co-production market and offered invaluable input and feedback on participants’ projects. Detailed case studies focusing on each of the host countries provided further contextualisation of specific nations’ current audio-visual trends, highlighting similarities between other European countries, potential difficulties and opportunities for collaboration. Participants were able to develop their projects between workshops with the support of the ENGAGE online script mentor as well as additional support provided by academic staff from each of the host institutions.
